2nd Biennial Carbine Cardboard Classic

Bill Jackson | Published on 1/6/2026

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…*

One of the most famous and memorable movies of all time began this way. And it’s possible that lightning could strike twice, again (?).

Coming to a range near you, a competition so different, so radical, so fun that you can’t afford NOT to be there. From the creative and slightly abby-normal* brains of your Steel Challenge team of do-gooders, comes the epic, nee crazy, concept of shooting Steel Challenge stages with a centerfire rifle.

They said it can’t be done. And They were right! Well, at least not safely. Shooting steel plates at 7 yards with a .223 is definitely NOT safe! So, how do we do this safely, you ask? Change out the steel for white cardboard. Doh!*

And thus, was born the Carbine Cardboard Challenge. It’s not Steel Challenge in any sense of the term. But the basic concept is the same. Just way harder. “Why,” you ask, “is this idea so hard?” Because in the CCC, there is no audible feedback for a hit on target. And, .223 caliber rifle bullets don’t make holes big enough to see at distance, either. So, yep; it’s harder.

Mark your calendar now. On January 31, 2026, at 9 am, the 2nd biennial Cardboard Challenge returns to the pistol ranges of CRPC. Details (and registration) can be found at the Practiscore page at the button below. There’s one important take-away, though. This match is for centerfire rifles only. No rimfires and no PCCs. Both of those play well in regular Steel Challenge, so save them for then.
