On Saturday, June 27, the CRPC chapter of A Girl & A Gun participated in a special introduction to competitive shooting. Approximately a dozen ladies participated, along with instructor Sheila Farr, for the group’s monthly activity. The event introduced participants to two popular action-shooting sports: Steel Challenge and USPSA.
The afternoon began with an overview of the basic rules, range commands, safety procedures, and how each sport is run. Then it was time to put that information into practice. Under the guidance and supervision of trained Steel Challenge and USPSA Range Officers, each participant had the opportunity to shoot both a Steel Challenge stage and a USPSA stage.
For many, the experience of standing ready, hearing the command, and responding when “the buzzer goes off” was something entirely new—and a lot of fun. Scores were recorded for the group’s use, but the emphasis of the day was on safe participation, learning, and enjoying the experience rather than serious competition.
The ladies had a fantastic time, and several participants have already expressed interest in returning to try CRPC’s regular Steel Challenge and USPSA matches. CRPC appreciates Sheila Farr, A Girl & A Gun, and the Range Officers who helped make the day a safe, welcoming, and successful introduction to competitive shooting.
